Urban Transition , Low Density Urban Sprawl and Housing Conditions in Punjab
9972/PUNJAB/NRPU/R&D/HEC/2017
Duration of project is three year and it examines urban expansion, low-density urban sprawl, and their implications for housing conditions in major cities of Punjab, Pakistan. It addresses a significant research gap by examining urban transition, spatial expansion, sprawl, and housing conditions collectively. The study aims to trace urban transition in Punjab, assess urban expansion and sprawl in ed cities, examine effects on housing conditions, and identify underlying factors of urban transition and low-density sprawl. Secondary data from census reports and the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics were used to map provincial urban transition and assess housing conditions. Satellite imagery from ed periods was analyzed using NDVI, supervised classification, and change detection techniques. Results indicate a consistent decline in vegetation alongside expansion of built-up areas. Faisalabad, Lahore, Gujranwala, and Rawalpindi recorded substantial growth, while Multan showed a different pattern, with slight decline after 2014. The findings highlight rapid urban expansion and its implications for sustainable urban development.
